Closing Sessions for the First Scientific Research Ethics and Responsible Behavior Conference

Under the generous sponsorship of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the activities of the First Scientific Research Ethics Conference were concluded at the Martyr Conference Hall at Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) under the slogan "Responsible Conduct of Research", which was organized by the Deanship of Scientific Research at the university in smart partnership with the UNESCO Chair for Women, Science and Technology and with the participation of the Responsible conduct of research (RCR) program in Jordan and the National Institute of Health in the United States of America.

The conference was attended by Prof. Shambol Adlan, Chairman of SUST's Board of Directors, Prof. Eisa Bashier Mohamad, Vice Chancellor of SUST, Prof. Abdel-Azim Suleiman Al-Mahal, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Amal Omar Bakhiet, Dean of of Scientific Research, a group of directors of universities and scientific institutes, deans of colleges, and a large crowd of professors, students, researchers and experts from inside and outside Sudan representing different scientific fields.

Prof. Shambol Adlan stated that he was honored to attend this conference and said that good morals should be distinguished in receiving and disseminating science and knowledge. He explained that development will only come through scientific research and knowledge and bringing it to the ground as a service and leading to the desired and sustainable renaissance, especially that Sudan enjoys richness at various level.

Prof. Shambol also emphasized the need for the conference to be held periodically to continue the march of knowledge and science and its appropriation for future generations. Shambol praised the distinguished organization and the excellent and upscale services that resemble the leadership and uniqueness of SUST.

Comments from DSR

Prof. Amal Omar Bakhiet, dean of scientific research, thanked all the attendees and wished for more communication and continuity in the future in such scientific conferences. She said, "Knowledge, technology and technology are in the interest of development and the benefit of various sciences, and we in the Deanship of Scientific Research devote large areas of interest to all research and scientific ideas, while we are working hard to provide appropriate conditions and support".

Prof. Amal also appreciated the ideas presented, the exchange of experiences and knowledge, the cross-fertilization and convergence of cultures and sciences through the scientific and international conference. "We are grateful to all the partners for their great communication and effort, and we appreciate the sponsorship of the Ministry of Higher Education and the university for their supervision, interaction, and standing until the conference came out in its most complete and optimal form", she added.

Presented Papers

The conference contained many scientific papers.

  1. Prof. Bahaa Darwish from the Faculty of Arts, Minia University, Arab Republic of Egypt, presented a paper titled "The Charter of Ethics of Science and Technology in the Arab Region".
  2. Prof. Mohamed Ahmed Al-Sheikh, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, presented a research paper titled "Capacity Building in Research Ethics".
  3. Dr. Mariam Abbas Ibrahim from SUST presented a scientific paper on the ethics of scientific research in Sudan.
  4. Another paper titled "The concept of research behavior and its role in community service" was presented by Prof. Wael Al-Dulaimi presented another paper titled "Public Health Studies and Ethical Principles".
  5. Prof. Kenneth Goodman, a member of the Institute of Health and Research Sciences in the United States of America, presented a number of scientific lectures dealing with the basis and ethical thinking in human research and discussed the concepts of informed consent, privacy and confidentiality in research, and reviewed conflicts of interest in scientific research.
  6. Prof. Karem Al-Zoubi, a member of the Scientific Research Ethics Program in Jordan (RCR), presented a scientific paper titled "Observers and the legislation that has been adopted and the organization and codification of research ethics in humans". He also presented a paper titled "The charters and legislation that have been adopted in regulating and legitimizing the ethics of research on animals via video conferencing technology".
  7. Prof. Omar Khabour also gave an online lecture titled "Research Ethics Committees". He also gave a lecture titled "Categories of volunteers who need care and support in scientific research".
  8. Another lecture was presented by Prof. Alaa Aboulfotouh from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Alexandria University - Egypt about publications and research literature.
  9. Prof. Rana Dijani presented a lecture titled "Women in Clinical Trials (Ethics and Culture)".
  10. Prof. Nadia Al-Kadmiri from Morocco, gave an interactive lecture on misconduct in scientific research.

Conference Recommendations

The recommendations came as a whole in line with the brainstorming that took place in the conference

  1. Using technology on the basis of scientific research ethics.
  2. Raising awareness and encouraging communication and exchange of knowledge and information.
  3. Precaution and preservation of information by fortifying it (confidentiality, privacy) according to its data, especially with regard to technological research
  4. Enhancing trust between researchers and society.
  5. Following the responsible behavior in the research.
  6. The importance of ensuring the capabilities of the researcher and his familiarity with the concept of responsible behavior in research before conducting the research by the ethics committee in universities and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research
  7. Strengthening the potential and capabilities of the researcher and develop his talents.
  8. Respecting the participants in the research and ensuring their dignity and safety. Respecting animals in research and treating them in a humane manner to ensure their safety.
  9. Ensuring that the research on animals is conducted properly by verifying the abilities and qualifications of the researcher.
  10. Dissemination of knowledge to define the types of misconduct in the field of research and ways to avoid them. Introducing the scientific research ethics course within the teaching curricula in universities.

The conference included an honoring session for the visiting scholars from outside Sudan with certificates of appreciation and trophies. Certificates of attending the conference were also distributed to the participants amidst the warmth, happiness and interaction of all attendees.
