Hosted by Sudan University, QS Holds its First Introductory Workshop Targeting Sudanese Universities

Sudan University of science and technology in cooperation with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) hosted a workshop on ‘QS Arab Region University Ranking Methodology‘, supported by the ministry of higher education and research. The main speakers where Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director for QS Quacquarelli Symonds in Middle East, Africa & South Asia and Mr. Rami Awad the Regional Director for QS Quacquarelli Symonds in Middle East and Africa.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) is a UK company, founded in 1990, specialising in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world. The aim of the workshop was to give an introductory insight into the QS ranking process, and the importance ranking holds for Sudanese institutions.

In 2021, Sudan University of science and technology featured on QS Rankings for the very first time, and hence SUST’s strategic goal is to enhance its position in the coming couple of years and to be listed in higher positions in the international rankings.

Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, the regional director for QS Quacquarelli Symonds in Middle East, Africa and South Asia, warmly welcomed the participants thanking the administration of Sudan University of science and technology, namely Prof. Awad Saad Hassan, vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Mahdi Abbass Shakak, the deputy vice chancellor, Prof Amel Omer Bakhiet, Dean of scientific research in SUST, Dr. Ebtihal H. G. Yousif, manager of SUST Web Administration.

Dr. Fernandes, also warmly welcomed the participants from the ministry of higher education and scientific research, thanking Prof Sakina Yagi, and Prof Ahmed Hassan Fahl. He also gave a background of QS, noting that this the first workshop to be held in Sudan and describing it as a historic occasion marking the start of fruitful cooperation with Sudanese universities.

Mr. Rami Awad the Regional Director for QS Quacquarelli Symonds in Middle East and Africa, gave an insightful presentation about QS ranking methodology in the Arab Region rankings, stressing the importance of classification in pushing universities in the region to new levels and QS's willingness to help with knowledge and experience.

Webometrics Feb 2022: SUST Digital Repository Ranks First among Sudanese Universities and Advances Globally

Sudan University of Science and Technology ranked first among Sudanese universities in, in Webometrics TRANSPARENT RANKING for Digital Repositories by Google Scholar for its thirteenth edition, February 2022, with a total number of 22,000 records.

Globally, the university ranked 209-th out of 3751 in the level of institutional repositories and ranked 228-th out of 3885 at the level of all repositories around the world.

Appreciation to Academic Staff Participating in the Social Entrepreneurship Incubator Program

Professor Awad Saad Hassan, Vice Chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology, extends his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the team of professors and lecturers participating in the Social Entrepreneurship Incubator Program sponsored by the British Council and the Sudanese Social Enterprise Association Sudan (SESA), namely,

It is worth noting that the Social Entrepreneurship Incubator program was sponsored by the British Council and the Sudanese Social Enterprise Association Sudan (SESA), and the incubator lasted about 9 months of advanced training for 13 units related to innovative social ideas to find solutions to societal problems. At the end of the program, SUST students were among the top 5 projects.

Dr. Tariq Okair, the director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment at the university, explained that Social entrepreneurship is based on solving societal and environmental problems, they are projects and businesses that generate profits like others, but the profits are reinvested to serve a goal and a societal mission, to create positive change in society, create new job opportunities and reduce inequality, and combine the entrepreneurial skills of the private sector with the values of the private sector public services.

Also, the Sudanese Society for Social Entrepreneurship is the executive body of the program and has linked the entrepreneurship centers in universities, the British Council and the Entrepreneurship Academy. The workshops were held in Corinthia Tower and the training was administered by SESA trainers in addition to university staff awho were nominated by the university's entrepreneurship centers.

SUST Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Member – Dr. Abdallah Hassan Bashir

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Abdallah Hassan Bashir, the staff member in the college of Fine and Applied Arts who passed away in Thursday, 3rd of February 2022.

May Allah, the Almighty, award him mercy, forgiveness and the highest ranks in heavens for what he offered during his life's journey, and to inspire his family patience and solace.

Please keep his family in your prayers as they are passing through these difficult times.

Webometrics Jan 2022: Sudan University Ranks First among Sudanese Universities, and Progresses in Africa, the Arab World, and Globally

Sudan University of Science and Technology ranked first of Sudanese universities in Webometrics classification of international universities and institutes for January 2022. This classification is an important international classification of universities and depends on three criteria, which are "impact", "openness" and "excellence".

It is worth noting that the university has advanced globally by 35 steps, as it ranked 2640 globally among 31,000 educational institutions of higher education.

Furthermore, the university also ranked first in Webometrics TRANSPARENT RANKING of Top Universities by Citations in Top Google Scholar profiles.

In addition to all of the above, Sudan University of Science and Technology was distinguished in this classification as the only Sudanese university to feature among the top 100 among the Arab world, where it ranked 92nd. In Africa SUST ranked 77th.

Prof Awad Saad Hassan , vice chancellor of the university, happily extends his heartfelt congratulations to all staff and students as SUST continues to progress locally, regionally and globally.

British Council & SESA: SUST Students Projects are among the Top five for Social Enterprise Incubators

Professor Awad Saad Hassan, vice chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology, and the entrepreneurship center administration would like to extend their sincere congratulations to the students who were among the top 5 projects in a Social Entrepreneurship Incubator Program that brought together three universities, Sudan for Science and Technology (SUST), University of Khartoum and University of Science & Technology (UST), for Social Enterprise incubation.

Dr. Tarig Okair, manager of the entrepreneurship center in the university, explained that the whole program is funded and led by the British council, in addition to Social Enterprise Sudan Association (SESA) as an implementing partner, which had a major role in implementing the program in an excellent and professional manner in terms of organization and coordination between entrepreneurship centers in universities and contributing to training.

The program incubated social entrepreneurs from the three aforementioned universities that were selected by the British Council, given that it has protocols with these mentioned universities, and given that they will act as nuclei for all Sudanese universities later, so that they will be the leading universities that will lead the societal work for students, and it was also mentioned that this program targets 21 male and female students as a first batch to incubate from various disciplines of universities, whether it is agriculture, engineering, administrative sciences.

Dr. Okair also mentioned that 7 students from each university were formally selected by the entrepreneurship centers in each university, and these students underwent intensive doses of training in social business management. The incubator lasted 9 months of advanced training for 13 units related to innovative social ideas to find solutions to societal problems.

Training showed impressive results, as many of the trainees came up with wonderful ideas and great projects, Competitions arose among them in the presence of a jury made up of senior professionals and experts and international organizations, including UNIDO and the Arab Organization for Agriculture.

What is the role of the Entrepreneurship Center in Sudan University?

In response to the question above, Dr. Tariq explained that it is a program that is always concerned with developing performance and leadership and administrative skills for students or even professors, and it also raises awareness of the importance of self-employment and the importance of business management, so that the individual does not have to rely on government salary only in facing life's challenges, difficulties and vicissitudes He also said that he always calls for each individual to have his own investments in addition to the job he works in, and this only comes through ideas that are applied on the ground and reap a lot of profits.

SUST Mechanical Engineering Student becomes the First Sudanese Appointed Solidworks Student Leader

Professor Awad Saad Hassan, Vice chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology, and the College of Engineering, would like to extend their heartfelt congratulations to the fifth year student, Mohammed Almojtaba Ezadeen, at the School of Mechanical Engineering, for the great achievement of being the first Sudanese to be chosen as a Solidworks Student Leader and therefore representing Sudan, in addition to being able to add the names of Sudan University of Science and Technology and the College of Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering.

It is worth mentioning that the student, Mohammed Almojtaba Ezadeen, holds several international professional certificates in mechanical design, and he is not only the first Sudanese to be chosen as a student leader for Solidworks, but the second Arab and African among an elite of 15 distinguished students in the world, and thus he was able to add Sudan and Sudan University of Science and Technology to the world map in the field of mechanical design.

Also, Mohammed Almojtaba was awarded the title of Solidworks Champion, among only 460 currently holders of this title from all over the world.

Graduates of Architecture and Planning Win First Place in Africa in Architectural Heritage Digital Transformation Competition

Professor Awad Saad Hassan, vice chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology, extends his sincere congratulations to the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at the university, as the project submitted, representing the Republic of Sudan, by graduates of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning achieved first place in Africa in a regional architectural competition organized by the African Union of Architects in cooperation with UNESCO on the digital transformation competition to showcase architectural heritage of ancient buildings in Africa.

Phase 1

The African Union of Architects (AUA), in cooperation with UNESCO, announced an architectural competition on digital transformation to showcase the architectural heritage of ancient buildings in Africa, with Sudan representing the eastern region, Tunisia representing the northern region, Chad representing the central region, and Angola representing the southern region.

Four Sudanese universities were chosen to compete in the display of four archaeological and historical buildings in Khartoum:

  1. Sudan University of Science and Technology …. Grand Holiday Villa Hotel
  2. University of Khartoum … University of Khartoum buildings.
  3. University of Science and Technology ... Omdurman municipality building.
  4. East Nile College … Post and Telegraph Building.

The competing projects were sorted in February 2021, and the project submitted by graduates of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning at Sudan University of Science and Technology won first place, thus becoming representatives of Sudan and the Eastern Region of Africa and then the winners entered a regional competition with the aforementioned countries.

Phase 2

The competing projects were presented in August 2021 electronically, and then the project submitted by the Republic of Sudan, by graduates of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, ranked first in Africa with 88% compared to 74% for the second winner.

The winning project will be presented in the exhibition accompanying the events of the African Architects Conference in Morocco TBA.

Dr. Qarrad Fadlallah, Dean of the College of Architecture and Planning, also expressed his happiness with this achievement and the great win, saying, “I am pleased on my own behalf and on behalf of all the professors of the College of Architecture and Planning to extend my warm congratulations to the young architects who graduated from the College of Architecture and Planning for this great achievement.”

"We thank all the college professors for their efforts and arming these graduates and students in general with the knowledge, sciences and experiences that enabled them to compete with their peers in Africa and internationally", Dr. Qarrad added wishing the graduates a career path full of achievements and success.

Prof. Awad Saad Hassan Mohamed, vice chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology and the university administration, wishes peace and mercy for the souls of the martyrs of the Sudanese revolution and the martyrs of the massacre of the 17th of January 2022, who were assassinated by the forces of treachery and betrayal from the fateful coup of October 25 2021, and wishes a speedy recovery for the wounded and the return of the missing.

Accordingly, we announce the suspension of studies, exams and administrative work in the various faculties, institutes and departments of the university on the 18th and 19th of January 2022. This is due to our belief in the unity of our stance towards civil disobedience, and we declare our full support for all the entities and bodies that call for the civil disobedience. We are committed to what was approved by the Preparatory Committee of the Sudan University of Science and Technology Syndicate.

SUST Mourns Prof. Abbas Suleiman Hamed Elsebaei

It is with great sadness that we learned about the passing of Prof. Abbas Suleiman Hamed Elsebaei who passed away on Sunday 16th January 2022.

The deceased worked as teaching staff of the Higher Institute of Music and Theater from the late seventies to the beginning of the second millennium. He was a member of the Arab Academy of Music for many years.

The vice chancellor of Sudan University of Science and Technology, the Dean and staff of the College of Music and Drama, would like to extend their sincere heartfelt sympathy and prayers to his family, colleagues and students.

May Allah accept him with his immense mercifulness and grant him the highest rank in paradise. Please keep him and his family in your prayers as they go through this difficult time.
