| SUST has vertically and horizontally been expanding in respect of programmes, student numbers and colleges. It began with limited colleges, programmes and students, but now it draws 19 colleges rendering 63 bachelor's degree programmes and 75 intermediate diploma programmes.
There are 25,000 students registered for bachelor’s
degree programme, 17,000 students registered for intermediate diploma
programme, 1000 students registered in postgraduate diploma, 220
Master degree students and 260 PHD students.
SUST has exclusive colleges: College of Fine and Applied Arts, College
of Music and Drama, College of Physical Education, College of Water
Science and Technology, College of Petroleum, College of Telecommunications
Science, Institute of Child and Woman Development and the Laser
Institute for Graduate Studies.
There are 900 teachers and 500 teaching assistants some of them
are now on scholarship at home and abroad.
SUST pays due concern to staff training on partial or full scholarships
provided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research
or on local resources.
The University’s concern with teaching and supporting staff
covers other areas including improvement of standard of living by
increasing salaries, provision of long-term loans, easy hire-purchase
cars, and support to enable the staff to participate in conferences
and training sessions abroad.
The University, moreover, has included families of the staff in
the Takaful (solidarity) Medication Programme supported by the University
and supported the staff to perform haj (pilgrimage) and Umrah (minor
haj) from its resources. The University’s financial support
over the last three years is estimated at 75% from its total budget.
As for students, SUST has created good atmosphere and care through
the Students Deanship and restored the Students’ Union after
four years of absence. Restoring the Union has brought stability
to the University and helped resolve most of the problems facing
the students.
Centre of Peace Culture was set up in 2000, to push ahead the ongoing
peace process. The Centre began its activity with a number of symposia
and workshops and training sessions at the University and other states, especially contact and dispute areas. For example, the Centre
has trained Basic Level teachers in West and South Kodofan, Upper
Nile and Bahrel Ghazal States on how to disseminate peace culture
In 2000, the Centre organized two training sessions in cooperation
with Intitute of Diplomatic Studies at the Foreign Ministry and
the U.S. based Conflict Resolution, Research and Resource Institute[CRI]
tended to train diplomats and politicians on negotiation techniques.
The Centre is currently working on two programmes: Academic programme
which awards Master and PHD in disputes settlement in cooperation
with CRI, while other is social one which targets the grassroots.
The main activity of the Centre is to control and disarm traditional
societies in cooperation with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The Centre, moreover, has signed a number of agreements with specialized
universities and institutes, e.g University of Norvin, University
of Port Elizabeth in South Africa and University of Dar Essalam
in Tanzania, and CRI.
