The Institute for Family & Community Development Organizes a Seminar on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the International Law

The Institute for Family & Community Development in Sudan University of Science & Technology (SUST) has organized, in collaboration with Sanad Charity Foundation, the monthly forum entitled (the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in International Law between Theory and Practice in Sudan)

Prof Dr. Gadalla Abdalla Alhasan, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of SUST addressed the forum expressing SUSTís pride in the Institute which has become a shining example representing a model for interaction between the community and SUST, thus putting a warm human face on the University's public image, indicating that the University accommodates a number students with special needs in different colleges who have formed an Association to voice their demands for submittal to the Vice-Chancellorís Office.

Prof Gadalla also said that it has been long customary for SUST to create partnerships with the various sectors in the University, expressing hope that the Forum will come up with recommendations to serve social and sustainable development objectives and defend the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

ďToday, we witness with agony, the many children rights violations that gravely affect the fabric of our local and international society,Ē said Dr. Al-Shaffa ĎAbd al-Qadir, Dean of the Institute for Family & Community Development addressing the forum, stressing that Belgrade General Conference of 1980, has ensured the genuine integration of the disabled into the society, and their right to acquire special skills which could help them develop their capacities to take primary responsibility for themselves and aid them looking after their life, under the principle of self-reliance, adding that the same Conference has guaranteed them civil and legitimacy rights. However, still there barriers to political participation for people with disabilities, such as participation in voting and election because the community is not able to distinguish between the proportion of disabilities, in addition to their right to live with their families.

The forum contained a variety of papers, the first one has been delivered by Dr. Salma at-Tayib ĎAli Taha, founder of at-Tayib ĎAli Taha Academy for Disabled in Kosti city, addressing the rights of disabled set forth in International laws, compared to their rights in Sudan.


The second paper has been presented by Dr. Ahmad Mahmud Muhammad ĎIsa, Director of al-Gadarif Digital Organization, entitled (The Role of TeleCenter in Gadarif in Applying the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities), in addition to a third paper delivered by Dr. Colonel (retd), Badr ad-Din Ahmad Hasan, member of the Council of Persons with Disabilities in Khartoum State, under the title (The Rights of Disabled in Sudan from Exception to Equality) compared to International laws.
